Regarded as our era’s greatest living theatre director, Peter Brook has created an immense body of work that spans 7+ decades. South Asians may know him as the man who, along with Jean-Claude Carrière, transformed Hindu mythology into universalized art, accessible to any culture. The legendary director of innumerable groundbreaking productions, created along with Jean-Claude Carrière, an 9-hour adaptation of the Indian epic,Mahabharata (1985), staged with an international multicultural cast – a watershed moment in theatre history. The only theatre director to have earned the highest honors in 3 countries, Brook is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Honoree in the American Theatre Hall of Fame and an Officier de l’Ordre de la Legion d’honneur in France. He is the recipient of several Tonys, Emmys, the Prix Italia, the Praemium Imperiale and the Ibsen Award, to name a few. He has written several books on theatre.
