Chitra, Warrior Princess

Palo Alto, May 2015

Produced and Presented by: EnActe Arts

Written By: Rabindranath Tagore

Director: Ranjita Chakravarty

This production is a blending of a one act play “Chitra” written by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1895 and the dance drama “Chitrangada” he wrote in 1936. Tagore wrote this story as an adaptation from an incident in the epic Mahabharata where there is a very brief reference to the marriage of Arjun (the Pandava hero of Mahabharata) and Chitrangada the Princess of Manipur. Tagore took that incident and wrote a lyrical adaptation. The essence of Tagore’s story is that having lived as a monk for 12 years Arjun comes to Manipur during his travels. The King of Manipur had been granted a boon by Lord Shiva that he will only have male heirs. Despite that boon a girl Chitrangada (Chitra) was born who he brought up as son and taught her all the “manly” attributes. This story is about the union of Chitra and Arjun with its twists and turns. We hope to bring Tagore to non-Bengali audiences and who even after 150 years is relevant Theatre meets dance as Director Ranjita Chakravarty draws from Tagore’s 1895 one-act Chitra and his 1936 dance-drama Chitrangada to create the spell-binding tale of Chitra, Princess of Manipur. Born to a King promised only male heirs and raised as a male warrior, a chance meeting with Arjuna the legendary Pandava warrior invokes passion in her heart and makes her question her status in life. Witness the twists and turns in her courtship of Arjuna in this lyrical and magical English language performance that stays true to the heart of Tagore’s poetry and music.
